Fifty days after Easter, the Catholic Church celebrates the great feast of Pentecost—a powerful and joyful moment that marks the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles. Often called the “birthday of the Church,” Pentecost reminds us that God did not leave His followers alone after the Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus. Instead, He sent the Holy Spirit to guide, strengthen, and inspire them.
The story of Pentecost is found in Acts of the Apostles chapter 2. The Apostles were gathered together when suddenly there came a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and tongues of fire appeared above them. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in different languages so people from many nations could understand the message of Christ.
Before Pentecost, the Apostles were fearful and uncertain. After receiving the Holy Spirit, they became bold witnesses to the Gospel. Saint Peter, who once denied Jesus out of fear, courageously preached to thousands. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, the Church began to grow.
Pentecost teaches us that the Holy Spirit is still active in our lives today. The same Spirit that strengthened the Apostles helps us live with courage, wisdom, faith, and joy. The gifts of the Holy Spirit—wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord—help us grow closer to God and live as faithful disciples.
The color red is often worn on Pentecost to symbolize the fire of the Holy Spirit. Churches may also emphasize symbols such as wind, flames, and doves, all reminders of God’s presence and power.
At Everest Academy, Pentecost is an opportunity to reflect on how we are called to share Christ with others through our words, actions, and virtues. Just as the Apostles were sent forth filled with the Holy Spirit, we too are called to go out into the world with faith and courage.
Pentecost reminds us that the Holy Spirit continues to guide the Church, strengthen believers, and reveal Christ through each one of us.
