The Virtue of Determination: Choosing to Persevere

Determination is the quiet strength that keeps us moving forward when something is difficult. It is the virtue that helps us stay committed to what is good and worthwhile, even when progress feels slow or obstacles stand in the way.

Being determined does not mean everything comes easily. In fact, determination is most visible in moments of challenge—when a student keeps trying after a mistake, when a child practices a skill that does not come naturally, or when we choose to finish what we started. Determination teaches us that effort matters and that growth often comes through perseverance.

From a faith perspective, determination is rooted in trust. We trust that God is working even when we cannot immediately see results. We learn to rely not only on our own strength, but also on God’s grace to help us endure and grow.

For children, determination is built through small, daily opportunities to struggle productively. Allowing children to work through challenges, rather than stepping in too quickly, helps them develop confidence and resilience. Each time they persevere, they discover that they are capable of more than they thought.

Determination also shapes character. It encourages responsibility, patience, and courage. Over time, these habits form individuals who do not give up easily, who approach challenges with hope, and who remain faithful to their commitments.

When we choose determination, we are choosing to keep going—one step at a time. It is a virtue that strengthens us not only in school, but in life, helping us grow into people who persevere with purpose, faith, and hope.
