Ascension Thursday marks an important moment in the Easter season and in the life of the Church. Celebrated forty days after Easter, the Ascension commemorates the day Jesus ascended into Heaven in the presence of His disciples.
After His Resurrection, Jesus spent forty days teaching, encouraging, and preparing His followers for the mission ahead. Before ascending to the Father, He gave them a final command: to go forth and share the Gospel with the world. Though He would no longer remain physically with them, He promised they would not be alone. The Ascension points us toward the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and reminds us that Christ continues to guide His Church.
At first glance, the Ascension may seem like a moment of departure, but it is truly a celebration of hope and promise. Jesus’ return to Heaven opens the way for us to one day share in eternal life with Him. It reminds us that our ultimate home is not here on earth, but with God.
For Catholics, Ascension Thursday is also a reminder of our mission. Just as the disciples were called to go out into the world with courage and faith, we too are called to live as witnesses to Christ in our daily lives—through kindness, service, prayer, and love for others.
In schools and families, this feast day offers an opportunity to reflect on what it means to keep our hearts focused on Heaven while carrying out the work God has entrusted to us here on earth. It is a day to remember that faith is not passive; it calls us to action.
As we celebrate the Ascension, may we be inspired to live with hope, trust in God’s plan, and the confidence that Christ remains with us always.
