Every October 2, the Catholic Church celebrates the Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels, reminding us of a beautiful truth of our faith: God cares for each of us so deeply that He gives us a guardian angel to watch over and guide us.
From the moment of our birth, our guardian angel accompanies us throughout our earthly journey. Angels are spiritual beings created by God who serve Him and carry out His will. Our guardian angels have a particular mission—to protect us, guide us toward what is good, and help lead us closer to God.
Our Guardian Angel Is Always With Us
Children often have a natural sense of wonder about their guardian angels. Teaching them about their guardian angel can help them understand that they are never alone.
Our guardian angel does not take away our freedom or make our choices for us. Instead, our angel can inspire us toward what is good and help protect us from spiritual and physical dangers. When we are tempted to make a poor choice, our guardian angel can help remind us to choose what is right.
We can speak to our guardian angel in prayer throughout the day. We can ask for help when we are afraid, tempted, confused, or simply need a little extra guidance.
A Simple Prayer
One of the most familiar prayers of the Catholic Church is the Guardian Angel Prayer:
Angel of God, my guardian dear,
To whom God’s love commits me here,
Ever this day, be at my side,
To light and guard, to rule and guide.
Amen.
This simple prayer is a wonderful one for children to learn and pray each morning or before bed.
Teaching Children About Their Guardian Angels
Parents can help children develop a relationship of prayer with their guardian angel by encouraging them to:
- Pray the Guardian Angel Prayer each morning.
- Ask their guardian angel to help them make good choices.
- Remember their guardian angel when they feel afraid or alone.
- Thank God for the gift of their guardian angel.
- Pray for the guardian angels of their friends and family.
- Ask their guardian angel to help them become more attentive to God’s inspirations.
At Everest Academy, we can remind our students that God’s care for them extends beyond the classroom, playground, and school day. Their guardian angel is always near, quietly helping them grow in holiness.
As we celebrate the Holy Guardian Angels, let us thank God for this beautiful gift and ask our angels to help us become the people God created us to be.
Holy Guardian Angels, pray for us!
