The History of Father’s Day: Honoring the Men Who Lead with Love

Father’s Day is a beloved occasion dedicated to celebrating dads, grandfathers, and father figures who have shaped our lives with wisdom, sacrifice, and love. But while the holiday feels like a long-standing tradition, its history is relatively recent—and rooted in both heartfelt gratitude and the desire for equal recognition alongside Mother’s Day.

The Beginnings of Father’s Day

The idea of Father’s Day began in the early 20th century. In 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, was inspired by a Mother’s Day sermon and wanted to create a similar day to honor her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran and single dad who raised six children after his wife’s death.

Thanks to Sonora’s efforts, the first official Father’s Day celebration was held on June 19, 1910, in Spokane. Local churches, shops, and even government officials supported the idea. While the day didn’t immediately gain national traction, it planted the seeds for a broader movement.

A Slow Climb to National Recognition

Over the following decades, various attempts were made to formalize Father’s Day. Presidents like Woodrow Wilson and Calvin Coolidge supported the idea, but concerns about commercialism and the overlap with other holidays slowed progress.

It wasn’t until 1972, under President Richard Nixon, that Father’s Day was officially established as a national holiday, celebrated each year on the third Sunday in June.

More Than a Card and a Tie

While the day has become synonymous with backyard barbecues, handmade cards, and gift-giving, its purpose remains deeply meaningful. Father’s Day is an opportunity to recognize the strength, guidance, and love that fathers provide—often quietly, consistently, and without fanfare.

In our Catholic tradition, we are reminded of St. Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus and a model of humility, courage, and faithful fatherhood. His example teaches us that being a father is not only about provision and protection but also about spiritual leadership and selfless love.

Celebrating Fatherhood at Everest Academy

At Everest Academy, we honor the important role fathers and father figures play in the lives of our students. Whether through school events, attending Mass, or simply seeing dads walking their children to school, we are continually inspired by the strength and presence of our school’s fathers.

This Father’s Day, we thank all the men who lead with love, who show up each day, and who teach their children by example how to live with faith and integrity. You are seen, appreciated, and deeply loved.

Happy Father’s Day!
