The Beautiful Bond of Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus

In the Gospel story of Jesus’ earthly ministry, there are few families as well-loved and familiar as the siblings Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. These three saints, who lived in the village of Bethany near Jerusalem, were among Jesus’ closest friends — offering Him hospitality, comfort, and faith during His public life. Their story is a beautiful reminder of friendship with Christ, the diversity of service, and the power of resurrection hope.

🏡 A Home for Jesus

The home of Martha, Mary, and Lazarus was a safe haven for Jesus. Scripture tells us that He visited often, finding not only rest but deep companionship. In a world where many misunderstood Him, this little family welcomed Him with love and faith. Their household shows us how our homes, too, can be places where Jesus is known, honored, and loved.

🙏 Martha: The Faithful Servant

Martha is often remembered for her busyness. In Luke 10:38-42, we see her bustling about, concerned with preparing a meal while her sister Mary sits at Jesus’ feet. While this story sometimes gets reduced to a warning against busyness, Martha’s heart was rooted in hospitality — a sacred act of service. And later, in John 11, it is Martha who boldly proclaims her belief in the resurrection, declaring: “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God.” Her faith was strong and active.

💗 Mary: The Heart of Contemplation

Mary, on the other hand, shows us the importance of stillness and presence. She is the one who chose the “better part,” listening to Jesus as He spoke. In another moving moment in John 12, Mary anoints Jesus’ feet with costly perfume, an act of profound love and worship. Her example reminds us to take time in quiet prayer, to honor Christ with our love and attention.

🌅 Lazarus: A Sign of Hope

Lazarus is best known for the miracle of being raised from the dead after four days in the tomb (John 11). His story is a powerful sign that Jesus is Lord over life and death. Through Lazarus, we are given a glimpse of the Resurrection — a promise that death is not the end for those who believe. Lazarus reminds us that even when all seems lost, Jesus can restore and bring life.

🕊️ A Shared Feast Day

In 2021, the Church began celebrating these three saints together on July 29, honoring not only their individual holiness but also the sanctity of their shared life and friendship with Jesus. Together, they reflect a balance of action, contemplation, and faith — a trio of virtues that all of us can aspire to.

May Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus inspire us to welcome Jesus into our homes, to serve Him with love, to sit at His feet in prayer, and to believe in His power to bring new life.

Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, pray for us!
