The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary: A Celebration of Hope

Each year on August 15, the Catholic Church celebrates the beautiful Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a special day when we remember that, at the end of her earthly life, Mary was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.

The Assumption reminds us of Mary’s unique role in God’s plan of salvation. From the moment she said “yes” to God’s invitation to become the mother of Jesus, Mary trusted Him completely. She remained faithful through moments of great joy as well as tremendous sorrow, including watching her Son suffer and die on the Cross.

Mary Shows Us How to Say “Yes” to God

Mary’s life provides a wonderful example for all of us. Her response to the angel Gabriel—“Let it be done unto me according to your word”—demonstrates her complete trust in God.

Mary didn’t know everything that would happen. She didn’t have all the answers. But she trusted that God had a plan.

That is a lesson we can all carry with us, especially as we begin a new school year. There may be times when our children—and even we as parents—feel uncertain about what lies ahead. Like Mary, we can choose to trust God and say yes to the opportunities He places before us.

A Sign of Hope

The Assumption is also a powerful reminder of our ultimate destination. Mary shares in the glory of Heaven, giving us hope that our earthly lives are not the end of our story.

The Church teaches that Mary was assumed body and soul into Heaven because of her special participation in the life and mission of her Son. Her Assumption points us toward the promise of eternal life with God.

At Everest Academy, we strive to help our students understand that education is about more than academic achievement. We seek to form the whole person—intellectually, spiritually, humanly, and apostolically—so that our students learn to recognize God’s presence in their lives and strive toward holiness.

Following Mary’s Example

As we celebrate the Assumption, we can ask ourselves:

  • Where is God asking me to trust Him?
  • How can I say “yes” to God more fully?
  • How can I show greater kindness and service to others?
  • What can I learn from Mary’s humility, courage, and faith?

May Mary, our loving Mother, watch over our Everest Academy families as we begin another school year. May she guide our students, teachers, and parents closer to her Son and help us follow her example of faith, trust, humility, and love.

Mary, assumed into Heaven, pray for us!
