Each year on July 22, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of St. Mary Magdalene, one of Jesus’ most devoted followers and the first witness to His Resurrection. Her story is one of transformation, unwavering faith, and hope—a beautiful reminder that God’s love has the power to renew every heart.
For families, St. Mary Magdalene offers an inspiring example of what it means to follow Christ faithfully, trust in His mercy, and boldly share the Good News with others.
A Faithful Disciple
The Gospels tell us that Jesus freed Mary Magdalene from great suffering, and from that moment forward, she devoted her life to following Him. She traveled with Jesus and His disciples, helping support His ministry and remaining faithful even during the darkest moments of His Passion.
While many fled in fear, Mary Magdalene stayed near the Cross. She witnessed Christ’s suffering and remained steadfast in her love for Him.
Her courage reminds us that true discipleship means remaining faithful not only in times of joy but also during life’s greatest challenges.
The First Witness of the Resurrection
On Easter morning, Mary Magdalene went to Jesus’ tomb while it was still dark, intending to care for His body. Instead, she discovered the empty tomb and encountered the risen Christ.
At first, she did not recognize Him. But when Jesus simply spoke her name—”Mary”—she immediately knew it was her Lord.
Jesus then entrusted her with an extraordinary mission: to announce His Resurrection to the Apostles.
Because she became the first person sent to proclaim the risen Christ, the Church has often called St. Mary Magdalene the “Apostle to the Apostles.”
Lessons for Our Families
St. Mary Magdalene’s life offers timeless lessons that families can live every day.
God’s Mercy Changes Lives
No matter our past mistakes or struggles, Jesus invites each of us to begin again. His mercy is always greater than our failures.
Stay Close to Jesus
Mary Magdalene remained faithful through both joy and sorrow. Her example reminds us to stay close to Christ through daily prayer, the sacraments, and trust in God’s plan.
Listen When God Calls Your Name
When Jesus called Mary by name, everything changed. God knows each of us personally and calls each person to a unique mission.
Helping our children discover their God-given gifts and purpose is one of the greatest responsibilities we have as parents and educators.
Share the Good News
After encountering the risen Jesus, Mary Magdalene didn’t keep the good news to herself. She immediately shared it with others.
As Christians, we are called to do the same through our words, our actions, and the way we live our lives.
Living Like St. Mary Magdalene
This week, consider one simple way your family can follow St. Mary Magdalene’s example:
- Spend a few quiet minutes each day in prayer, listening for God’s voice.
- Attend Mass together if possible.
- Celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation and experience God’s mercy.
- Perform an unexpected act of kindness for someone in need.
- Share with your children how Jesus has been present in your own life.
Small moments of faith lived consistently can have a lasting impact on our families.
