October 18 marks the feast day of St. Luke the Evangelist, one of the four Gospel writers and a beloved figure in the early Church. Known as the author of the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles, St. Luke offers us a beautiful example of faith, compassion, and dedication to spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ.
St. Luke was a physician by trade — a man of science and healing. His writings reflect his gentle heart and attention to the human side of Christ’s ministry. In his Gospel, we see a deep focus on mercy, forgiveness, and the dignity of every person. Luke tells stories found nowhere else in Scripture: the Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son, the Annunciation to Mary, and the Visitation. Through these accounts, we encounter a Savior who reaches out to the poor, the lost, and the brokenhearted.
Tradition tells us that Luke was a companion of St. Paul, traveling with him on missionary journeys to share the message of salvation. Despite hardships, imprisonment, and persecution, Luke remained steadfast in his faith and devoted to proclaiming the love of Christ to all nations. His life reminds us that the Gospel is not meant to stay on the pages of a book, but to be lived and shared every day.
For us at Everest Academy, St. Luke’s example invites reflection on how we can use our own talents in service to God. Whether through teaching, helping others, creating beauty, or offering encouragement, we are each called to be modern-day evangelists — people who share the joy of the Gospel through both our words and our actions.
As we celebrate St. Luke’s feast day, let us ask for his intercession that we, too, may live with compassion, use our gifts for healing and service, and courageously bring Christ’s light to the world.
“The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.” — Luke 10:2
