Saints Simon and Jude, Apostles: Faithful Servants of Christ

Each year on October 28, the Church celebrates the feast of Saints Simon and Jude, two of the twelve apostles who followed Jesus with steadfast faith and courage. Though less is written about them in Scripture than about other apostles, their quiet fidelity and missionary zeal are a powerful reminder that holiness is often found in humble, hidden service.

Saint Simon the Zealot
Simon is often called Simon the Zealot to distinguish him from Simon Peter. The title “Zealot” may refer to his strong devotion to God’s law or possibly to his association with a group of fervent Jews known as the Zealots, who sought to defend the Jewish faith against Roman influence. Regardless of the meaning, Simon’s zeal found its true and holy expression in following Christ and proclaiming the Gospel with courage. Tradition holds that after Pentecost, Simon traveled far and wide—possibly to Egypt, Persia, or Armenia—spreading the Good News until his martyrdom.

Saint Jude Thaddeus
Jude, also known as Thaddeus, is best known as the author of a brief but powerful New Testament letter urging the early Christians to persevere in their faith and to be steadfast against false teachings. He is remembered as the patron saint of lost or desperate causes, a devotion that grew from the belief that he was often overlooked in prayer due to the similarity of his name to Judas Iscariot. Ironically, this neglect only magnified his intercessory power for those most in need of hope and consolation. Like Simon, Jude devoted his life to proclaiming Christ’s message and is said to have suffered martyrdom while on mission in Persia.

A Model of Faith and Perseverance
Saints Simon and Jude remind us that discipleship is not about fame or recognition but about faithful commitment to Christ’s mission. They quietly yet boldly carried the Gospel to distant lands, giving their lives for the truth they had come to know in Jesus. Their example calls us to live our faith with the same zeal and hope, trusting that God works powerfully through our perseverance and trust.

Prayer
O glorious Apostles, Saints Simon and Jude, who gave your lives for the love of Christ, intercede for us that we may remain steadfast in faith and courageous in proclaiming the Gospel. May your example inspire us to follow Christ with zeal and to bring His light to others in our daily lives. Amen.
