Summer break is a time for sunshine, relaxation, and making memories—but it’s also a critical time to keep young minds active. At Everest Academy, we understand the importance of balancing rest and learning. Without consistent engagement, students can experience what educators call the “summer slide”—a loss of academic skills and knowledge over the summer months.
Research shows that students, especially in elementary and middle school, can lose up to two months of learning in reading and math during the summer. But with a few simple strategies, families can keep the learning going—while still having fun!
1. Read Every Day
Encourage your child to read for at least 20 minutes a day. Let them choose books that interest them, and visit the library often. Make reading a shared activity—read aloud together, start a summer book club, or listen to audiobooks on road trips.
2. Make Math Meaningful
From measuring ingredients in the kitchen to counting change at the store, everyday math is everywhere. Incorporate games, puzzles, flashcards, or apps that reinforce math facts in a fun and interactive way.
3. Explore STEAM Activities
Keep curiosity alive with hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Sign up for camps like Everest Academy’s Soccer & STEAM Camp (July 21–25) or try simple experiments at home using everyday materials.
4. Write It Down
Encourage journal writing, letter writing, or creative storytelling. Keeping a summer journal not only strengthens writing skills but also helps kids reflect on their experiences and feelings.
5. Set Goals and Routines
Create a flexible daily schedule that includes time for reading, outdoor play, chores, and learning. Setting small, achievable goals throughout the summer helps build a sense of accomplishment and responsibility.
6. Use Technology Wisely
There are many excellent educational websites and apps that reinforce core subjects. Set screen time limits and ensure that online time includes meaningful learning experiences.
7. Stay Social and Active
Group learning, team sports, and community events help children grow socially and emotionally. Encourage involvement in local camps, parish activities, or playdates that inspire collaboration and creativity.
At Everest Academy, we believe learning is a joyful, lifelong journey. With a little planning, summer can be a season of growth, discovery, and fun—keeping students on track for a strong start in the fall.
