Our Lady of Sorrows: Learning from Mary’s Faith and Strength

On September 15, the Catholic Church celebrates the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows. This day invites us to reflect on the deep suffering Mary experienced throughout her life, especially as she witnessed the suffering and death of her Son, Jesus.

Mary experienced sorrow in a very real and human way. She watched Jesus suffer, yet she remained faithful. She did not turn away from God when life became difficult. Instead, she stood faithfully beside her Son and trusted in God’s plan.

Mary’s example teaches us that faith does not mean that we will never experience sadness, disappointment, or hardship. Rather, faith gives us the strength to remain close to God through those difficult moments. Mary’s courage, patience, and trust provide an example for all of us.

At Everest Academy, we strive to help our students develop these same virtues. Through our Catholic formation, students are encouraged to turn to God in both joyful and difficult moments. We teach them that challenges can help us grow in perseverance, compassion, and faith.

Our Lady of Sorrows also reminds us to notice the suffering of others. Just as Mary stood beside Jesus, we can stand beside those who are hurting by offering a kind word, a listening ear, a prayer, or a helping hand.

As we honor Our Lady of Sorrows, may we ask Mary to pray for our Everest families and our students. May she help our Knights remain faithful when life is difficult, compassionate toward others, and confident in God’s love.

Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us.
