Each year on February 11, the Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, recalling one of the most beloved Marian apparitions and a powerful reminder of Mary’s tender care for her children.
In 1858, in the small town of Lourdes, France, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared eighteen times to a young peasant girl, Saint Bernadette Soubirous. Poor, uneducated, and often overlooked by society, Bernadette was chosen by God to receive a message meant for the whole world. Mary appeared to her in a rocky grotto near the River Gave, clothed in white with a blue sash and holding a rosary—an image now familiar to Catholics everywhere.
During these apparitions, Mary spoke simple but profound words. She called for prayer, penance, and conversion of heart. One of the most significant moments came when Mary identified herself as the Immaculate Conception, affirming a Church teaching that had been formally defined just four years earlier. Bernadette, who did not have the education to invent such a title, faithfully shared this message, strengthening the Church’s belief in the authenticity of the apparitions.
At Mary’s request, Bernadette uncovered a small spring of water in the grotto. What appeared at first to be insignificant soon became a source of grace and healing. Over the years, countless pilgrims have traveled to Lourdes seeking physical healing, spiritual renewal, and peace of heart. While not all leave cured in body, many testify to deeper healing—of faith restored, hope renewed, and burdens lifted.
Our Lady of Lourdes reminds us that God often works through humility and simplicity. Mary chose a young girl with no social status to deliver a message of eternal importance. She continues to invite us, as she invited Bernadette, to trust in God, to pray faithfully, and to turn our hearts toward her Son.
As we honor Our Lady of Lourdes, especially known as the patroness of the sick, we are encouraged to bring our own needs, struggles, and prayers to Mary. In doing so, we place our trust in her loving intercession and in Christ, the true source of all healing.
May Our Lady of Lourdes lead us closer to her Son and teach us to live with faith, humility, and hope.
