Our Lady of Fatima: A Message of Prayer and Peace

Our Lady of Fatima is one of the most well-known Marian devotions in the Catholic Church. The feast day, celebrated on May 13, remembers the appearance of the Blessed Virgin Mary to three young shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917.

The children—Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta—reported that Mary appeared to them several times over the course of six months. During these apparitions, Our Lady delivered a message centered on prayer, repentance, and peace. She encouraged the children and all people to pray the Rosary daily, make sacrifices for sinners, and turn their hearts back to God.

One of the most powerful aspects of the Fatima story is that Mary chose children to share her message with the world. Despite their young age, the children responded with courage, faith, and deep devotion. Their example reminds us that holiness is possible for everyone, no matter their age.

The message of Fatima remains relevant today. In a world often filled with anxiety, division, and distraction, Our Lady’s call to prayer and conversion continues to guide Catholics toward peace and trust in God. The Rosary, in particular, remains a central part of the Fatima message and a powerful way to grow closer to Christ through Mary.

Catholics honor Our Lady of Fatima not only by remembering the apparitions, but by living out the message she shared: pray faithfully, seek peace, and place our trust in God.

As we celebrate Our Lady of Fatima, may we follow the example of the three shepherd children by responding to God with openness, courage, and faith. May Mary continue to lead us closer to her Son and help us become instruments of peace in our homes, schools, and communities.
