Mr. Gath: A Lifelong Educator Who Just Can’t Stay Away

When it comes to passion for teaching, few can match the energy, dedication, and humor of Mr. Gath, one of Everest Academy’s most beloved middle school teachers. His journey through education—and back again—reminds us that great teachers don’t just make a difference in students’ lives; they become unforgettable parts of their story.

Mr. Gath began his professional journey with a Bachelor of Arts from Governor’s State University, concentrating in English Literature, History, and Secondary Education. He later went on to earn a Master’s degree in English Literature, laying the academic foundation for what would become a decades-long career in education.

He began his classroom career at Oak Lawn High School as an English teacher, inspiring students with literature, language, and the power of storytelling. But his path wasn’t limited to education—Mr. Gath spent time as a Recreation Developer for the Chicago Park District and a Direct Mail Writer for Time Inc., proving his versatility and love for both creativity and community engagement.

Still, the classroom called him back.

He returned to teaching English at De LaSalle Institute, where he spent ten meaningful years before joining the faculty at Simmons Middle School in Oak Lawn. There, he truly made his mark—25 years of teaching English Literature and History, coaching basketball, cross country, and track, leading as the Director of the National Honors Society, and serving as English Department Chair. For over two decades, Mr. Gath helped shape not just students’ academic abilities, but also their character, athletic spirit, and leadership skills.

Eventually, Everest Academy was lucky enough to welcome Mr. Gath as our middle school English teacher. Over time, he took on the roles of PE teacher and Athletic Director, bringing both brains and energy to the student body. When he announced his retirement, students were heartbroken—but as it turns out, retirement didn’t last long.

The following school year, Mr. Gath returned to the classroom, once again teaching middle school English Literature at Everest, and picking up right where he left off: making students think deeply, laugh often, and love learning.

Whether he’s teaching Shakespeare or leading a game in the gym, Mr. Gath brings heart, humor, and decades of wisdom to Everest Academy. We are grateful for his incredible legacy—and even more grateful that he couldn’t stay away.
