Mary, Mother of the Church

The feast of Mary, Mother of the Church, is a beautiful reminder of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s special role in the life of every Christian and in the life of the Church itself. Celebrated on the Monday after Pentecost, this feast invites us to reflect on Mary not only as the Mother of Jesus, but also as the spiritual mother of all believers.

At the foot of the Cross, Jesus entrusted Mary to His beloved disciple John when He said, “Behold, your mother” (John 19:27). In that moment, the Church has long understood that Mary became the mother of all Christ’s disciples. She cares for us, prays for us, and continually leads us closer to her Son.

Mary’s motherhood is gentle, faithful, and constant. Throughout the Gospels, we see her quiet trust in God’s plan. From her “yes” at the Annunciation to her presence at the Cross and with the Apostles at Pentecost, Mary remained steadfast in faith. She is a model of discipleship and a source of comfort and hope for the faithful.

In 2018, Pope Francis officially added the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church to the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar. He explained that this feast encourages the growth of a maternal sense within the Church and reminds us of Mary’s loving care for all people.

As a Catholic school community, we can look to Mary as the perfect example of virtue, humility, compassion, and trust in God. She teaches us how to love others, how to serve joyfully, and how to remain faithful even during difficult moments.

May we turn to Mary, Mother of the Church, asking for her intercession for our families, our students, our faculty, and our entire Everest Academy community. May she guide us ever closer to Christ and help us to live each day with faith, courage, and love.
