Joan Behme: Educator, Mentor, Mother

Joan Behme has dedicated her life to the education and development of young minds, both in the classroom and at home. With a deep-rooted passion for learning, she has shaped the lives of countless children, from her early days as a teacher to her many years as a homeschooling mother.

Mrs. Behme earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from Rockford University, equipping her with the skills and knowledge to create a nurturing and effective learning environment. She began her teaching career instructing Pre-K4 for three years before moving on to teach 2nd grade for another. However, her most profound and long-lasting impact has been through the education of her own children.

After stepping away from the traditional classroom to start a family, Mrs. Behme chose to homeschool each of her five children from birth until high school. Her four daughters completed their homeschool education and moved on to promising careers and studies—two in Montessori education and nursing, while her younger daughters are currently attending Chesterton Academy. Her son also benefited from her homeschooling guidance until recently.

Beyond her home, Mrs. Behme has been an active leader in her community. She has shared her passion for faith and education by teaching middle school religious education, leading a homeschool group, and assisting with a kindergarten American Heritage troupe. Her unwavering dedication has fostered a love for learning and personal growth in both her children and the many young learners she has influenced over the years.

Mrs. Behme’s journey reflects an inspiring commitment to education, faith, and family. She continues to be a guiding force in the lives of those around her, proving that the love of learning truly begins at home.
