It’s Not Too Late: Simple Lenten Fasts for Grammar School Students

When we think about Lent, many people imagine that the time for choosing a sacrifice has already passed once the first couple of weeks are over. But the truth is, it’s never too late to start. The third week of Lent is actually a wonderful time for students to pause, reflect, and choose a small sacrifice that helps them grow closer to God.

For grammar school students, fasting does not need to be extreme or complicated. In fact, simple sacrifices are often the most meaningful because they help build good habits and strengthen virtue.

One idea is fasting from complaining. Students can challenge themselves to replace complaints with gratitude. Instead of saying, “I don’t want to do this,” they can try saying, “I’ll do my best.” Offering that effort to God can be a powerful prayer.

Another option is fasting from extra screen time. Giving up a few minutes of video games, TV, or tablets each day can create space for reading, playing outside, helping a sibling, or saying a short prayer.

Students might also fast from unkind words. This means making a special effort to speak kindly to classmates, siblings, and parents. Choosing patience and encouragement instead of teasing or arguing is a beautiful Lenten sacrifice.

Some children choose to fast from snacks or sweets between meals, offering that small hunger as a prayer for someone who is in need.

Lent is not only about giving things up—it is about growing in love. Even starting in the third week, a small sacrifice offered with a sincere heart can make this season meaningful. The goal is not perfection, but simply trying a little harder each day to love God and others more.
