Corpus Christi: Celebrating the Real Presence of Jesus

Each year, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, which means “The Body of Christ.” This beautiful feast invites Catholics to reflect on one of the greatest gifts Jesus has given us: His Real Presence in the Holy Eucharist.

At the Last Supper, Jesus took bread and wine and declared, “This is my Body” and “This is my Blood.” Through the power of the Holy Spirit and the words spoken by the priest at every Mass, that same miracle continues today. What appears to be bread and wine truly becomes the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ.

The Eucharist is not simply a symbol or a reminder of Jesus. It is Jesus Himself—fully present and fully alive. This belief is at the very heart of our Catholic faith and is why the Mass is the center of Christian life.

The Feast of Corpus Christi was established in the 13th century to give special honor to the Blessed Sacrament. Throughout the world, Catholics celebrate with Masses, Eucharistic adoration, and processions. During these processions, the Blessed Sacrament is carried through streets, neighborhoods, schools, and church grounds as a public witness of faith and devotion.

A Eucharistic procession is a powerful reminder that Jesus walks with us. Just as God accompanied His people throughout salvation history, Christ continues to journey with His Church today. As we follow Him in procession, we proclaim our belief that He is present among us and desires to be at the center of our lives.

For children, Corpus Christi offers a wonderful opportunity to deepen their understanding of the Eucharist. Parents can speak with their children about what happens at Mass, spend time in Eucharistic adoration, or simply reflect together on the gift of receiving Jesus in Holy Communion.

At Everest Academy, we celebrated this feast in a special way through our school Eucharistic Procession. As students, faculty, and families gather in prayer, we are reminded that Christ is the foundation of our school community. He guides our learning, strengthens our friendships, and calls us to live lives of virtue and service.

The Solemnity of Corpus Christi invites each of us to renew our love for the Eucharist and our gratitude for Christ’s abiding presence. In a world that often moves quickly and distracts us from what matters most, the Eucharist reminds us that Jesus is always near—waiting for us, loving us, and inviting us into a deeper relationship with Him.

As we celebrate Corpus Christi, may we echo the words of St. Thomas Aquinas, whose hymns still inspire the Church today: “Adoro te devote, latens Deitas”—”I devoutly adore You, hidden God.”

May our hearts always recognize and rejoice in the gift of Jesus Christ, truly present in the Most Holy Eucharist.
