Christopher Columbus: Courage, Curiosity, and Controversy

Each October, we remember Christopher Columbus — an explorer whose voyages across the Atlantic Ocean changed the course of world history. Born in Genoa, Italy, around 1451, Columbus had a dream that seemed impossible at the time: to reach Asia by sailing west across the uncharted ocean. His courage and determination opened the door to a new era of exploration, discovery, and exchange between continents.

With the support of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, Columbus set sail in 1492 with three ships — the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María. After more than two months at sea, he and his crew reached land in what we now know as the Bahamas, believing they had arrived in Asia. Though he never reached the East Indies as he had hoped, his voyage connected Europe with the Americas for the first time in history.

Columbus’s journey sparked centuries of exploration and exchange between the Old and New Worlds. New foods, animals, and ideas crossed the ocean, forever changing life on both sides. His courage, faith, and perseverance inspired countless explorers who followed in his path.

However, Columbus’s legacy is also complex. The arrival of Europeans in the Americas led to suffering for many Indigenous peoples through disease, slavery, and loss of land. Today, historians and educators strive to tell the full story — recognizing both Columbus’s spirit of exploration and the consequences of his voyages.

At Everest Academy, we can learn valuable lessons from Columbus’s story. His courage to dream big, his perseverance through hardship, and his faith in God’s guidance remind us that great journeys often begin with trust and determination. Yet, we are also called to reflect on history with compassion and humility — acknowledging mistakes of the past and seeking to build a world rooted in respect, truth, and love.

As we honor Columbus Day, may we be inspired to explore boldly, seek wisdom, and use our gifts to make discoveries that bring goodness to others and glory to God.
